American ExpressBusiness Gold Cardvs

Tab vs Amex Business Gold

Amex Business Gold rewards the spend. Tab handles the restaurant work around it, from the receipt at the swipe to coded spend in QuickBooks Online.

The short answer

Both cards pay you back. The split is what the card is built to do: reward the spend, or handle the restaurant work around it.

Choose Tab to…

  • Get the receipt while the manager still has it. Tab texts whoever spent the money right after the swipe, and receipts come back in about 90 seconds on average.
  • Put the purchase on the right restaurant and the right LLC. The entity is set the moment the card is used, so nobody rebuilds it from a statement at close.
  • Hand a manager a card that already carries its limit. The spend limit and its interval are set as the card is created, so a 10pm freezer repair does not wait on finance.
  • Send coded spend into QuickBooks Online. A full integration, included on the free Base plan, plus customizable CSV exports for another ledger.
  • Open a card for a new location with no credit check. No credit checks are required for Tab Cards, and the Base plan is free.

Choose Amex Business Gold to…

  • Earn 4X points where the business already spends most. Amex pays 4X Membership Rewards on the top two of six eligible categories each billing cycle, on the first $150,000 in combined purchases a calendar year.
  • Use the statement credits and travel benefits built into the card. Amex values the credits at up to $395 a year, and the card earns 3X on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel.
  • Keep spending room that adapts instead of a fixed limit. Amex's No Preset Spending Limit moves with your purchase, payment, and credit history rather than sitting at one number.

Neither one fits? The wider field of business credit cards for restaurant owners covers the cards built for different problems again.

How they stack up, job by job

Tab takes all five restaurant workflow jobs. Rewards, support and price stay unscored because their value depends on your spending and plan.

Getting the receipt before it gets lost
Tab

Tab texts for the receipt after each swipe, and it comes back in about 90 seconds on average. Business Gold publishes no equivalent prompt, so someone still collects it later.

Putting each purchase on the right restaurant and LLC
Tab

Tab tags the restaurant and LLC when the card is used. Business Gold runs additional cards under one account, so finance assigns the entity later.

Setting a manager's card limit
Tab

Tab sets each card's limit and schedule when it is created. Amex offers employee-card limits, but its terms say they are not guaranteed and some charges may fall outside them.

Sending clean card data into QuickBooks Online
Tab

Tab sends the receipt, restaurant and entity through its full QuickBooks Online integration. Amex connects as a bank feed, so finance adds that restaurant context in QuickBooks.

Paying the vendors a restaurant buys from
Tab

Tab runs on Visa and works wherever Visa is accepted. Amex acceptance varies, so check your regular restaurant vendors before moving their spend.

Getting value back on restaurant spend
Compare net value

Tab returns 1% cash back on every swipe with no annual fee. Amex can earn more when spend fits its two eligible 4X categories, stays within the $150,000 cap and points are redeemed well.

Getting help when the books are due
Fit check

Tab offers live US and Canada support. Amex support draws both long-term praise and the most complaints in the reviews analyzed, so service quality depends on the account and issue.

What the card costs
Fit check

Tab Base is free with no card fee; Pro is $150 per location monthly. Amex Business Gold charges $375 yearly, plus $95 for up to five additional Gold cards.

From the swipe to clean books

Tab sorts out the purchase details before anyone has to chase them at month end. Three steps, and what each looks like in the product.

  1. Set the limit

Issue the card to the right employee and restaurant. The spend limit and its interval are set as the card is created, which is why a manager can buy before anyone builds a budget.

Tab's Create Card panel with fields for card name, financial account, cardholder and card type, next to a spending limit interval of daily, weekly, monthly or yearly and a card spend limit field
Create Card: the cardholder, the restaurant, the limit, and its interval.
  2. Swipe. The receipt gets asked for by text.

Tab texts the person who spent the money for the receipt, the note, and the restaurant, and they come back in about 90 seconds on average. The charge carries its card, its merchant, and an Assign Location control, so the purchase is tied to a restaurant on the transaction itself.

A Tab transaction detail view showing date posted, the card name Sysco Card - Austin Location, the card's last four digits, a $5,920.23 amount and Sysco Corporation as the merchant, with a prompt to upload a receipt to bind to this transaction and an Assign Location button
The receipt prompt, bound to the transaction it belongs to.
  3. Clean data lands in your books

Reviewed spend goes to QuickBooks Online through a full integration included on the free Base plan, or out as a customizable CSV export for another ledger. Every charge reads Verified or Unverified first, so the one still missing its receipt shows up days before the close instead of at it.

Tab's Recent Transactions panel listing vendor, date, amount, payment method and payment status, with two charges marked Verified and a $795.00 plumbing charge marked Unverified after 7 days
Recent Transactions: Verified and Unverified, days before the close.

Questions card buyers usually ask

Straight answers to the questions operators ask before switching.

For rewards and travel, it can, if the group spends heavily in the two eligible categories Amex pays 4X on. The receipt, the location tag and the entity still have to be handled somewhere else.

Yes. An Amex Business account links to QuickBooks Online as a bank feed that downloads transactions. Tab has a full QuickBooks Online integration on the free Base plan, and the charge arrives already carrying its restaurant and its receipt.

Yes. Amex offers Employee Card spending limits. Its own terms say a limit is not a guarantee, that limits typically refresh 24 to 48 hours after the closing date, and that restaurant tips are among the charges a limit may not apply to.

No. Travel is not something Tab does. Business Gold earns 3X on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel, so a group with real travel spend has a fair reason to keep it.

Tab. The restaurant and the entity are set the moment the card is used, and the free Base plan states no user, entity, card or location limits. Groups with five or more locations get custom pricing.

The Base plan is free. Pro is $150 per month per location, and groups with five or more locations get custom pricing. Tab does not charge a fee on the card itself.

No. Tab states that no credit checks are required for Tab Cards, so a location LLC opened last quarter does not hold up the rollout.

About a week. Everything is set up in that first week and the account is ready for its first billing cycle. Plan it around a cycle boundary rather than mid-month.

The charge stays marked Unverified in Recent Transactions. You see it days before the close, so you can ask while the person still remembers what they bought.

Plenty of groups keep an Amex for travel and category spend and run Tab as the card managers carry. Do not hand the same manager two cards, though, or receipts end up in two places. The same jobs run against the Chase Ink business cards in a separate head-to-head.
